Sense of Taste, Show & Teach, Easter Party, and a Special Visitor!

We sure had a BUSY week!

We finished the five senses unit, with our Sense of Taste.

We looked closely at each other's tongues
and noticed the many papillae containing our tiny tastebuds, helping us recognize different tastes.

We talked about the different areas of our tongue
Of course, scientific research suggests all areas of the tongue are capable of detecting all tastes, although some may areas may be more sensitive to a specific taste. But, we still think the tongue map is cool to at least pretend it's your tongue? Right?

We tasted sweet, sour, salty, and bitter . . .
Sour

And placed our names under the appropriate face.
Happy = loved it
Sad = not so much

Salty

Bitter chocolate - so cruel for the children expecting a piece of candy . . .
They all agree - chocolate needs sugar

Then we imagined up what our favorite sandwich would be . . .
And painted a colorful picture of our yummy sandwiches.

We played a fun tasting game, as well!
(You can see our special visitor in the background here -
my sister came to visit from New York and we loved having a teacher assistant!)

After being blindfolded,
The kids guessed what color candy had been placed in their mouth.
We all LOVED this game - try it at home together! First, taste each color and study the flavors, then blindfold each other and test your sense of taste!

In math, we continued to explore greater numbers

as well as our discussion on basic addition principles.
We divided the class into groups using various classifications (pants/shorts, hair color, eye color, shoes/sandals, etc.) and recorded how many in each group.
Here we did boys and girls.
Then we brought the two groups together to find out how many in all.

We used candy our special visitor brought us to map "part, part, whole" problems.
Everything is more fun with candy : )

This week was also our Show & Teach!
Reese showed us how to make fruit shapes for our snack - yum!

Logan showed us his shark tooth and taught us how sharp it is
by cutting a crayon in half with it.

Connor taught us how to peel a banana. Then we ate it up for snack!

Ellie taught us how to open and close a plastic egg - a very
important skill to learn with Easter approaching!

Using peeps and plastic eggs, Bailee taught us how a baby chick comes out of an egg.

Kensington taught us how to share using lollipops.

Alaina taught us how to find candy in Easter eggs -
another important skill we'll be using soon : )

Then we had our Easter party!
It was great fun! So much fun, I hardly was able to snap any photos - but here are a few:
Easter Egg Hunt

Easter version of pin the tail on the donkey - placing the egg in the Easter Basket.
Eating yummy Easter treats -
Thanks everyone for sending in such yummy, fun treats - we had a wonderful party!!

Hope you have an awesome Spring Break!
